Mas d'Espanet

The estate is located between Uzes and Sommieres in the Languedoc, in a massif of scrubland called Les Lens. Following in the footsteps of a family tradition of winemakers, Denys set up Mas d’Espanet in 1980.

The vineyard had been left to abandon and the first task was to save the old varieties of red Languedoc grapes and to plant new white vines chosen on the basis of the soil type and the type of wines we wanted to make.

In 1999 the winery building was restored with the former barn transformed into a barrel cellar. The estate today has 20 hectares in production.

Cultivation ….

A Mediterranean climate with influence from the Rhone valley. The estate nestles in the foothills of the Cevennes at an altitude of 180m. There is a wide variety of soil types with a clay-limestone base, parcel exposures and grape varieties.

The Mistral winds, cool nights, natural cultivation techniques, low yields (short pruning, bud removal) and above all, devoted care from the winemaker, contribute to forging the characteristic freshness and aromatic concentration in the wines from Mas d’Espanet:

“nurturing the full expression of the terroir”.

The vineyard was converted to fully organic farming in 2007 and the cultivation is based on the principles of biodynamic agriculture: pruning and tilling based on the cycles of the moon. Natural grass in the vineyard in winter for sheep grazing from October to March. Treatments are made using copper, sulphur and macerated nettles and horsetail.
